For the last 14 years (2001-2014), the number of annual space launch attempts has increased, according to the Space Launch Statistics dataset. The number of space launches increased by almost 50 percent during the period.

The largest operational launch facility is located in Baikonur, Kazakhstan, but leased to Russia. During the period from 2001 to 2014, the Baikonur Cosmodrome made 271 successful attempts, while the second most active facility, Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA, initiated half as many at 147 successful attempts. The third largest number of successful attempts was recorded at Kourou, French Guyana, with a total of 103 during the same period. Some countries - China, Japan, Russia, and the US - use more than one spaceport. As a result, China's share of total launches ranks it third worldwide, despite individual Chinese spaceports registering lower operational volume than Cape Canaveral and Kourou.

All Known Meteorite Falls

Within the field of meteoritics, the study of meteorites, a critical distinction is drawn between meteorites observed to have fallen and those that have been found, with the latter far exceeding the former. According to the Meteoritical Bulletin Database published by the Meteoritical Society, 60,000 meteorites have been found on Earth but their falls were not observed by people or automated devices. Another 1,152 meteorite falls have been observed and recorded throughout human history. The total mass of all of these extraterrestrial bodies is about 621 tonnes, or more than...

Space Launch History

From time to time we hear messages about space vehicles launches and sometimes about unsuccessful attempts. The former and especially the latter ones are widely broadcasted trough the TV and the Internet, being an exciting show for the viewers. We present not less exciting statistics on space launches on the underlying charts and tables. As you can see from the first chart, the total number of space launches decreased slightly in 2012 compared to 2011 breaking general upward tendency which has been lasting for the previous 9 years. The same picture is on the successful attempts:...

Earthquake Statistics

An earthquake (also known as a quake, tremor or temblor) is broadly defined by experts as the result of a sudden release of energy in the Earth’s crust that creates seismic waves. At the Earth’s surface, earthquakes manifest themselves by shaking and sometimes displacement of the ground. When the epicenter of a large earthquake is located offshore, the seabed may be displaced sufficiently to cause a tsunami. Earthquakes can also trigger landslides and occasionally volcanic activity. The reality of the more severe earthquakes are loss of human life and economic costs that can...

Solar System

ScienceDaily — New research led by Yale University scientists suggests that a rocky planet twice Earth's size orbiting a nearby star is a diamond planet. The planet -- called 55 Cancri e -- has a radius twice Earth's, and a mass eight times greater, making it a "super-Earth." It is one of five planets orbiting a sun-like star, 55 Cancri, that is located 40 light years from Earth yet visible to the naked eye in the constellation of Cancer.
