The share of renewable energy in gross final energy production in the EU increased from 10.5% in 2008 to 15.0% in 2013. The largest contributors were solid biofuels, amounting for half of the gross inland consumption of renewable energy in 2013. Hydropower was also a considerable contributor, but since 2000 its share is declining. In contrast, the share of wind and solar energy increased substantially owing to effective support schemes and dramatic cost reductions. In 2013, the share of renewable energy in gross final energy consumption was 5.0 percentage points below the Europe 2020 target of 20%.
