Global Competitiveness

The Global Competitiveness Index (GCI)  is a global study on the basis of which ranking of countries in terms of economic competitiveness in the world is formed. The World Economic Forum defines competitiveness as the ability of the country and its institutions to ensure stable economic growth, which would be stable in the medium term. GCI is determined by numerous and very diverse factors which were divided into three subindexes: Basic requirements, Efficiency enhancers, Innovation and sophistication factors. The index is composed of 12 pillars of competitiveness. They are Institutions, Infrastructure, Macroeconomic Stability, Health and Primary Education, Higher Education and Training, Goods Market Efficiency, Labour Market Efficiency, Financial Market Sophistication, Technological Readiness, Market Size, Business Sophistication, Innovation.  According to overall index, Switzerland is the most competitive country in the world retaining leading position since 2008 after it outpaced United States which, in turn, worsened its position and moved from the first to the third place over the same period. While competitiveness is positively related to the wealth of the nation expressed through the GDP per capita, the relation between competitiveness and happiness seems to follow negative square pattern: middle level of competitiveness corresponds to the highest level of happiness. Along with the index characterizing country's economic competitiveness (the Global Competitiveness Index) there are indexes assessing country's performance in innovation sphere and its subdivisions (Innovation Union Scoreboard, Knowledge Economy Index, Global Innovation Index).

Academic Ranking of World Universities

Since 2003 until now Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) conciders about 1000 universities all over the world in ordet to build ranking of 500 ones with the highest performance in academic and research fields. Its methodology implies assessing institutions by 6 indicators including alumni (Score on Alumni) and staff (Score on Award) winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers (Score on HiCi), papers published in Nature and Science (Score on N&S), papers indexed in major citation indices (Score on PUB), and the per capita academic performance of an institution (Score on PCP). In each field the best performing university is assigned 100 and the scores of the others are calculated as the percentage of the top. Performance by each indicator is given weight for the compound score (Total Score) to be obtained: Alumni - 10%, Award - 20%, HiCi - 20%, N&S - 20%, PUB - 20%, PCP - 10%. Tax Rates Across the World: Corporate Tax, Income Tax, Indirect Tax, and Social Security Rates //jp.knoema.com/weafnr/tax-rates-across-the-world-corporate-tax-income-tax-indirect-tax-and-social-security-rates 2018-04-23T11:19:49Z Alex Kulikov jp.knoema.com://jp.knoema.com/user/1847910
Tax Rates Across the World: Corporate Tax, Income Tax, Indirect Tax, and Social Security Rates

The comprehensive comparison of the taxation between different countries might be hindered by the fact that tax laws in most countries are extremely complex, and tax burdenfalls differently on different groups in each country and sub-national unit. Still, to enable cross-country comparison one can use the highest rates for each of the following tax types in each country:Corporate tax rate (tax on corporations);Indirect tax rate (for example, sales tax);Individual income tax rate (tax imposed on individuals);Social security rates (on employer and employee). The highest corporate tax rate among the 120 countries surveyed by KPMG is recorded in the United Arab Emirates, where corporations should pay 55 percent of their operating profit as a tax. However, this tax is only enforced on foreign oil companies. The US takes the second position with a top tax rate of 40 percent that is 16 percentage points higher than the average for all 120 countries. In contrast, Montenegro and Hungary have the lowest rate in the world of 9 percent, while the only major industrialized nation among the bottom 20 countries is Ireland, which is known for its low 12.5 percent rate. There are currently 7 countries in the world without a corporate income tax. All these income tax-free countries are small island nations: the Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Bermuda, Bonaire, Isle of Man, Guernsey, and Bahrain. The latter, meanwhile, while not having general corporate income tax has a targeted corporate income tax on oil companies. Overall, North America’s average corporate income tax rate of 33.25 percent is the highest among all regions. Europe has the lowest average tax rate at 19.71 percent, 4.58 percentage points below the worldwide average of 24.29 percent. Larger, more industrialized countries tend to have higher corporate income tax rates than the world as a whole. For example, the 35 nations of the OECD have an average corporate tax rate of 24.27 percent. Over the past eight years, countries across the globe have reduced in average their corporation tax rates. Thus, if in 2006, the worldwide average was approximately 27.5 percent, by 2017, the average rate had declined by roughly 3 percentage points to 24.3 percent. This downward trend held across all regions of the globe. Asia saw the largest absolute drop in the average corporate tax rate, that declined from 29 percent in 2006 to 21 percent in 2017. Countries of Latin America, in turn, reduced their corporate income tax rates the least, from 29 to 28 percent.

Ease of Doing Business Across the World

Doing Business assesses country regulations applied to small- and medium-size enterprises across 10 major areas of doing business from the registration of new entity to the resolving insolvency. Thriving small- and medium-size enterprises are one of the major drivers behind the creation of new jobs and growth of national wealth. That is why governments should provide such enterprises with prosperous environment, i.e. the rules that guarantee low transactional costs of time and money as well as predictability of economic interaction between the stakeholders. Thus, low costs of starting a business alone does not necessarily mean efficient regulations since absence of minority investors protection regulations or getting credit opportunities may considerably constrict firm's financing capability and, as a result, its growth potential. On average around the world, starting a business requires 25 days, 7 procedures and costs 32% of income per capita in fees. And while it takes half a day and one procedure to register new business in New Zealand, in Suriname the same procedure requires 208 days. Source: World Bank Doing Business 2014

Democracy from Central Europe to Eurasia

Today we present the results of democracy development survey conducted in 29 countries of Central Europe and Eurasia by "Freedom House", the organization established in 1941 in the United States and aimed at expansion of democracy across the world, as it is the best way to fight against totalitarian ideologies which still continue to prevail in several states. The ratings presented are based on a scale of 1 to 7, with 1 representing the highest level of democratic progress and 7 the lowest. The 2013 ratings reflect the period January 1 through December 31, 2012. Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan since 2010 bottom out the list of democracy score ranking: the entrenched political regimes in these countries destructed opposition and got rid of independent journalists struggling for freedom. As for the top of the list, Slovenia continues to keep leading position, being the best performing country according to Freedom House. In spite of that, surge of protests took place in Slovenia in 2012 caused by unpopularity of austerity package and allegations of corruption against senior politicians. The most significant improvement over 2012 year has passed across Latvia, Czech Republic and Georgia. Latvia's good performance is the result of continuously decreasing political influence of oligarchs as well as increased regulation of political party financing. On the whole, democracy quality has improved in 6 out of 29 countries under review during 2012. Source: Freedom House Nations in Transit 2013 See also: Democracy Index 2012

Third Billion Index, 2012

Booz & Company created the Third Billion Index, a ranking of 128 countries worldwide that is based on how effectively leaders are empowering women as economic agents in the marketplace. The index is a composite of established data on women’s economic and social status. The Third Billion Index is unique in that it focuses specifically on women in the world of work. As growing numbers of women enter the economic mainstream, they will have a profound effect on global business. A huge and fast-growing group of people are poised to take their place in the economic mainstream over the next decade, as employees, employers, producers, and entrepreneurs. This group’s impact on the global economy will be at least as significant as that of the billion-plus populations in both China and India. But its members have not yet attracted the attention they deserve. China and India each represent 1 billion emerging participants in the global marketplace, and this group of the same size, this “third billion,” is made up of women, in both developing and industrialized nations. Third Billion Index relies on two sub indices. Inputs: Assess government and private sector to improve the economic position of women Outputs:Represents observable aspects of women's participation in the national economy. Global Restrictions on Religion, 2013

The Americas, Europe, Sub-Saharan Africa and the Asia-Pacific region all had increases in overall restrictions on religion in 2011. Government restrictions declined slightly in Europe, but social hostilities increased. Asia and the Pacific had the sharpest increase in government restrictions, though the level of social hostilities remained roughly the same. By contrast, social hostilities edged up in sub-Saharan Africa, but government restrictions stayed about the same. Both government restrictions and social hostilities increased slightly in the Americas. Globally, the share of countries with high or very high restrictions on religion rose from 37% in the year ending in mid-2010 to 40% in 2011, a five-year high. Because some of the most restrictive countries are very populous, more than 5.1 billion people (74%) were living in countries with high government restrictions on religion or high social hostilities involving religion, the brunt of which often falls on religious minorities.
