(21 April 2020)  Apple Inc has joined the crowd of alternative data sources providing free access to data during the COVID-19 pandemic period in a effort to drive more rapid identification of critical turning points and new thresholds in health care, economics, social conditions and more. Apple's Mobility Trend indicators are available at national and subnational levels and are derived from requests for directions in its Apple Maps app.

  • According to Apple's mobility data, driving and walking in the world's largest economies plummeted between 50% and 90% globally compared to the pre-COVID period (baseline is January 13, 2020).
  • Mobility in Northern European countries, including Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark, as well as in Taiwan has decreased much less than in other regions.
  • Mobility trends point to an initial, albeit weak, recovery in driving and walking activity in the last 3 weeks.
